Check the platform you already own
The Witcher: Remastered available now says the upgrade is free for existing owners within the same platform ecosystem. The CD PROJEKT RED Press Center: Remastered available now page names GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. A separate path applies to Switch owners: the company says owners of the original Nintendo Switch version can claim the native Switch 2 edition at no charge once they move to that console.
For PC players with copies in several stores, check each library separately. The upgrade is tied to the platform ecosystem where the game was purchased, so a copy in one store does not automatically create an entitlement in another. Console owners should make the same check on the account that holds their game.
Two expansions are included
The Remastered update includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. The Witcher: Remastered available now page says both expansions are available to owners of the base game as part of the update. They add substantial story content beyond the main hunt for Ciri, so returning players can check whether either expansion is already installed before starting a new save or planning storage.
The Witcher: Remastered available now describes improvements across visuals, performance, gameplay and character progression. The Witcher: What's new in Remastered feature breakdown gives more detail: updated rendering and effects, animation changes, an overhauled skill system, and a first-person camera option. It also lists quality-of-life adjustments such as collecting loot without dismounting Roach and the option to disengage from combat.
Mods and features depend on platform
Cross-platform mod support is one of the larger additions. The in-game mod browser uses mod.io, and CD Projekt Red says players can connect a CD Projekt Red account with mod.io to browse and install creations. This is different from browsing a platform's existing community workshop, so PC players should review the options available for their storefront and any individual mod before installing it.
The PC version also adds path tracing, while the release announcement calls out dedicated PS5 Pro support. The native Switch 2 version brings the game to Nintendo's newer system with its own platform features. Rendering features depend on hardware, so do not assume every visual setting is available on every version.
What returning players should do
If you own The Witcher 3, start in the library tied to that purchase and check for the Remastered entitlement before buying. On Switch, confirm that you are using the Switch 2 account associated with your original game. Then review which changes are relevant to your hardware: PC players may be most interested in path tracing and mods, while console players can look at the updated presentation and controls.
CD Projekt Red has also announced Songs of the Past for 2027. That is a separate future expansion, while Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are the two add-ons included in the current update. Keep those releases distinct when checking what is part of the free upgrade.
The official launch trailer shows the remastered environments and combat in motion. The Witcher channel also published an announcement trailer ahead of launch, which introduces the remastered edition. Players can compare that footage with the features listed in the publisher's written breakdown, including system-specific changes and quality-of-life options.
