Epic Games is rebuilding the Epic Games Store launcher. It promised improvements for summer 2026, showed a 12-month roadmap with a private beta first in June, and then said the beta would take a few extra weeks and aim for mid-August, around Gamescom. Summer is over and no release date has been published, so the speed numbers that circulated in June remain targets and not results.

What Epic has put on the record
Epic's 2025 year in review for the store, published on February 4, 2026, holds the first commitment. In the words Engadget reproduces, Epic said it was "rebuilding the underlying architecture of the Epic Games Store Launcher and plan to ship improvements this summer." The same review named the Q2 2026 social features: community spaces, cross-platform chat, voice chat and parties that work outside a single game. It also set a cross-platform PC and mobile library for later in the year.
At Unreal Fest Chicago in June, Epic presented the plan itself. The session is on the Unreal Engine channel, and its description promises "a player-centric, games-first social ecosystem" and a look at the 12-month roadmap. A shorter State of Unreal clip, posted on June 25, adds the headline numbers: players spent $1.16 billion in the store in 2025, up 6 percent.
The roadmap and the speed claims
Engadget's report on the session, dated June 20, describes the core of what Epic showed. A private beta comes before a public release. The rebuilt launcher is meant to start about 5 times faster on an average cold start and to come back from the system tray about 6.5 times faster. Coverage such as Tom's Hardware's report lists player profiles, user reviews and universal controller support among the features planned.
Those figures are Epic's targets from a presentation. No public build exists yet to measure them against, which is why this post treats them as promises.
Unconfirmed rumour
The 5x and 6.5x speed figures are targets reported from Epic's June session. They have not been measured on a public build.
What slipped
On July 16 TheGamer quoted Epic: "We will need a few extra weeks to deliver the beta, and we are now targeting mid-August (around Gamescom)." The outlet did not name the channel Epic used, so treat it as outlet attribution and not as a link to an Epic post.
The target was missed. On August 13 an Epic developer told a community Discord AMA that a native Linux launcher was coming "soon" but would not be part of the preview release of the redesigned launcher, according to GamingOnLinux on August 14. In other words, the preview had not opened by mid-August. Seven weeks have passed since mid-August, and no report confirms that a preview has opened.
Part of the original plan did ship, though late. Epic Parties, the cross-platform voice chat across Fortnite, the launcher and the mobile apps, launched on September 3 according to Epic's blog and Engadget. The year in review had listed that feature for Q2 2026, which ended on June 30, so it arrived 65 days after the quarter closed.
What is still unknown
Epic has not published a date for the preview or the public release. It has not said whether the preview will be open to everyone or invite-only, and it has not said how the new launcher will perform on ordinary hardware. The Linux launcher has no date either. The places an announcement would appear are Epic's store news, the launcher's own patch notes and the Unreal Engine YouTube channel.
What it means if you use the store
Nothing changes in your library until Epic opens a preview or ships the new client. Free games still rotate on Thursdays at 15:00 UTC, and the claiming guide applies unchanged. This week's pair is covered in the System Shock 2 and Buried Stars post.
