Apex Legends Cipher launches November 3, with full patch notes scheduled for November 2. Respawn's preview introduces Strongholds, changes to Crypto and the Akimbo Wingman. Its ranked roadmap also explains which competitive changes belong to Season 31 and which are planned for Season 32 in early 2027.
If you are returning for ranked, plan around November's changes and keep the later rank structure and rewards overhaul on a separate list. Keep the current season's rules separate when discussing what your next ranked session will offer.
Strongholds ask your squad to hold ground
According to the Cipher designer notes, one Stronghold drops per match alongside existing Care Packages. Its loot remains locked until a team captures and holds the surrounding space. Other squads can contest the capture, and the landing structure deploys cover around itself.
Before committing to a capture, look for nearby teams and a route out. Taking the first position around an objective can be useful, but it also tells approaching opponents where they are likely to find a fight.
Agree on why your squad is pushing it. An equipment upgrade may be worth a fight, but the ring or a shortage of healing can make holding the area a poor trade. You can also use another team's capture attempt to decide where to move next.
The official Cipher announcement sets the November 3 arrival:
Revisit Crypto's habits before queueing
The preview gives Crypto's drone a 25-second battery and introduces enemy marking, alongside changes intended to reduce the time spent sitting in drone view. It also describes faster ways to trigger the EMP. Read the final notes before rebuilding your controls or treating a preview value as permanent.
An existing Crypto player should spend a short practice session checking the revised inputs and timing. Muscle memory is useful until a familiar action behaves differently. Learn how the drone returns and how quickly you can get back to moving with your team before testing it in a match where everybody expects the old routine.
Squadmates can help by agreeing on simple callouts. Let the team know when you are scouting and when you are ready to move. A kit aimed at more active play still needs coordination; a new mark is information your teammates must notice and act on.
Season 31 ranked changes start with access and bans
The ranked roadmap places Legend banning in matches with Diamond+ players, alongside Drop Zone deployment. Players vote for possible bans, and the system uses those votes to determine selection probabilities. It is not described as a guarantee that the single most-voted Legend is always removed.
Ranked access returns to account level 20 as Road to Ranked challenges are removed. The roadmap also introduces visible lobby tiers and adjusted entry costs when a squad is at least two tiers above or below the lobby's tier. Check the entry information when the match loads rather than assuming every match has the same cost.
Discuss these rules with friends who play at different ranks before queueing together. A squad can encounter a competitive rule because of who is in the lobby, while a player remembering an older access challenge may need to check the new requirement. Use the season's own rules when planning who can join.
Keep Season 32 reward plans on a separate list
Iron, Emerald and Grandmaster ranks, Open and Pro-Am Leagues, and the broader ranked rewards overhaul sit under Season 32 in Respawn's roadmap. These plans are useful to follow, but they should not be promised as rewards for playing Cipher's launch week.
If rewards are your main reason to grind, check the current season's actual reward information before committing a large amount of time. A roadmap can describe the direction of a system without establishing every final threshold or payout. Write down the season number next to a feature when sharing the news with your squad.
The November 2 patch notes are the next checkpoint for this preview. Look there for the full final change list and any revised values. Our earlier Apex Blood Pact event guide concerns a separate event; its tasks and rewards should not be read as Cipher's Battle Pass or ranked rewards.
